Digital Literacy

Liberal Arts & Sciences courses numbered 1100 and above satisfy the requirements for the Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science degrees. General education courses numbered 1000 and above satisfy the requirements for diplomas and certificates.

Courses at "zero" level are designed to strengthen academic skills. Courses at the "zero-zero" level prepare students for developmental coursework. These courses do not satisfy program requirements.

We will examine how media technologies, not only impact our daily routines, but also shape our social relationships and identities. Students will develop an awareness of and practice strategies for communicating and interacting with various social media technologies. Devices may include smartphones, tablets, and computers. Online Communications: This course provides an introduction to communicating online using various social media tools/applications and email. Students will create, communicate, collaborate and network with each other using Facebook, Twitter, Linked-in, and Outlook. Database concepts will also be introduced using online search techniques to provide solutions for today's relevant applications. (Prerequisite: none) (1 credit: 1 lecture/0 lab)

COMP1150Computer Applications 2 credits
Computer Applications: This course introduces operating system software and file management, including cloud storage. Students will develop word processing skills by creating and formatting documents for professional and personal use. Students will also develop spreadsheet skills through data entry, sheet formatting, formula and function manipulation, and chart creation. Finally, students will use presentation graphics software to build effective slideshow presentations.

COMP1445Advanced Computers: Issues and Applications 3 credits
Advanced Computers: Issues and Applications: This course will expand knowledge of computer concepts and applicable skills through individualized project-based assessments that focus on career development. Through an integrated and advanced approach, students will improve proficiency in popular software applications (word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and presentation graphics). Computer concepts will be examined at a deeper level and will include, but are not limited to, historical events, current/future technological trends, PC (personal computer) concepts, file management and storage, the Internet, online learning software and resources, digital communications, and computer security, ethics, and privacy. Prior knowledge of Microsoft Office 2013/Office 365 is recommended, but not required. (Prerequisite: BUSN1245 or COMP1130, COMP1135, and COMP1140 or instructor permission) (3 credits: 3 lecture/0 lab)
