Tech Devices

Laptops

Laptops or computers are the primary devices students use to access course materials. If you don't have easy access to a laptop or computer, the Academic Support Center has laptops available for lending. Contact us to learn more.

Scanmarker Air Pen Scanners

What's a pen scanner? It's like a pen that you run over text in a book or on screen. It reads the text out loud to you, or you can have it translate the text into a different language. To use the Scanmarker Pen Scanner, download the app onto a mobile device. Turn the pen on by clicking the pointed edge onto a surface three times. The pen will blink green and allow you to connect it to your mobile device via Bluetooth. Once the pen is all set up, you can begin scanning the materials.

Pocketalk Language Translators

This portable instant voice translator device can translate 82 different languages. To turn on the Language Translator, press the side button down. Once it is turned on, the screen will light up and show a Wi-Fi network screen. Next, connect it to Wi-Fi under the settings content. To translate information, press the bigger button down. When the button is down you can speak into the device.

Digital Voice Recorders

You can use a voice recorder to make audio recordings of lectures, tutoring appointments, and meetings. The voice recorder will help students who need to go over topics to reprocess information. It can be used to make up to 54 hours of continuous recordings with a full battery and will store up to 2,324 hours of recordings.

Wi-Fi Hotspots

If you don't have easy access to the internet, a mobile hotspot will help you get a secure, reliable Wi-Fi connection. The Academic Support Center has Wi-Fi hotspots available to check out to meet your short-term internet needs. Hotspots can be checked out for a period of up to two weeks (or longer) based on identified needs.

Web-Based Tools for Reading Assistance

ReadSpeaker

ReadSpeaker helps students by reading online materials aloud through their device. This technology creates artificial voices from text and is often used to complement digital information by reading text out loud. ReadSpeaker is available on D2L and includes a tutorial on how to utilize the resource.

Kurzweil Reader

The Kurzweil Reader is a web-based literacy support program that provides support for students who struggle to read fluently or have challenges with their reading skills. Our Kurzweil Readers are available in Winona and Red Wing in the Academic Support Center study rooms for students to utilize.
