Hazardous Materials Procedure
In the event of an environmental spill involving hazardous chemicals or other materials, follow these guidelines.
- Determine the nature of the spill and begin appropriate notification.
- Small containable spill, call:
- Call Minnesota State College Southeast's Maintenance Department (ext. 2770)
- Call 911 immediately for Police and/or Fire Department, if medical attention is necessary.
- Large containable spill, call:
- 911 for emergency assistance
- Minnesota State College Southeast Security or Facilities Services personnel will be responsible for securing affected areas until arrival of Emergency Personnel.
- Provide first aid to those injured
- Remove the victims from the spill area to fresh air (if possible).
- Do not endanger your own life by entering areas with toxic gases.
- Evacuate the affected area of spill immediately. Use judgment depending on the nature and quantity of spilled material.
- Do not allow anyone to enter the affected area.
- Assist persons with disabilities in evacuation.
- Assess nature of spill for area to be evacuated; i.e. room, floor, building.
- Notify the Maintenance Department at 2770 for notification of Minnesota Duty Officer.
