Bomb Threat Procedure

Receiving The Threat

Members of the campus community who receive a bomb threat are encouraged to gain as much information as possible. Threats may be received in a number of ways and the response may be based on the manner in which the threat was received. Complete the Bomb Threat Checklist as thoroughly as possible.

Phone Threats

Anyone receiving a bomb threat by phone should complete the bomb threat checklist list as completely as possible. Once this has been completed the person receiving the call shall contact Southeast Maintenance (6360) or the front desk at 6300 immediately.

Written Threats

Anyone receiving a bomb threat in writing should first handle the correspondence as little as possible. The note and immediate area should be secured and no one should be allowed to enter and/or touch the note prior to Maintenance’s arrival. The person receiving the threat should contact Maintenance immediately.

Email Threats

Persons receiving a bomb threat via the email should leave the message on the computer. Southeast Security or Maintenance should then be contacted immediately. The person receiving the email should remain at the computer and not allow anyone to interfere and/or tamper with the message until Security’s/Maintenance’s arrival.

Verbal Threats

Anyone receiving a bomb threat in person and/or overhearing such a threat should obtain the following information if possible and practical. The name (if known), physical description, time and location of the threat, witnesses, exact wording of the threat and any other relevant information. The person witnessing the threat shall contact Minnesota State College Southeast’s Security or Maintenance immediately.

Building(s) will be reentered only after given clearance by the Vice-President of Student Affairs (or designee) charged with this responsibility. The Office of Student Affairs has coordinated this decision making between Security, Maintenance and directors responsible for various areas.
