Healthcare Careers in High Demand, Program Deadline Fast Approaching
Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical offers a variety of programs to meet the needs of an ever changing community. Students who want to enter Practical Nursing, Nursing Mobility or Medical Laboratory Technician programs should be aware that these programs utilize a secondary acceptance system. The deadline for students to complete their prerequisite checklist in order to start this fall is July 15, 2013. It is important to note that students must apply and be accepted to the college before they can apply to their program of choice.
Southeast Technical is responding to the region's nursing shortage with new degree options. The nursing program is more hands on than ever before. Clinical and lab experiences provide simulated scenarios and direct patient care encounters for students and multiple clinical sites allow students to explore different fields within nursing before graduation. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is predicting that job outlook for nurses will increase between 22 and 26 percent before 2020.
Employment of medical laboratory technicians is expected to grow 16 percent this decade. This program launched fall 2012 to meet the needs of an aging society. Increased demand for healthcare services and increasing complexity will increase the demand for lab personnel. MLTs work as members of the healthcare team performing laboratory procedures that aid in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. They perform blood collections, analyze blood and other body fluids, match blood for transfusions and examine specimens for bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms.
