Goodhue County History Center, MSC Southeast Collaborate on College History Center Exhibit

A Scholarly City - The History of Higher Education in Red Wing

History ExhibitA new history exhibit has been created to tell the story of higher education in Red Wing, MN. The exhibit will be on display at MSC Southeast in the main entry hallway from September 25 until the end of October, along with old college yearbooks, photos, and memorabilia.

While Minnesota State College Southeast is celebrating its 50th anniversary in the community this fall, the roots of higher ed run much deeper in Red Wing.

Before Minnesota was even a state, Hamline University was founded in Red Wing in 1854. Gustavus Adolphus started in a one-room building in 1862, but soon relocated to St. Peter, MN.

High atop college hill, the Red Wing Seminary (1879-1932) and Lutheran Ladies Seminary (1894-1920) made Red Wing a destination for students.

Professional education came to the forefront for a time with the opening of Beeman's Business College in 1886 and St. John's Hospital nursing training in 1903.

Finally, in 1973 Minnesota State College Southeast - then called the Red Wing Area Vocational Technical Institute - opened with a dedication ceremony that attracted more than 3000 people.

Learn all about these happenings and more by visiting the exhibit on campus through the end of Fall Semester or at the Goodhue County Historical Society later this year.

Free Nursing Assistant Training will be offered again at Minnesota State College Southeast this October

Certified Nursing Assistant 2019Because of the continuing shortfall of qualified nursing assistants statewide, Minnesota is once again providing tuition-free Nursing Assistant training and testing through the Next Generation Nursing Assistant - Train. Test Work. initiative.

Minnesota State College Southeast is offering the training, which will save participants more than $1500. Courses start on October 9 in Red Wing and October 23 in Winona. Classes take place on campus and online via Zoom over a six-week period. Additional courses will be offered in 2024.

"This is an opportunity to learn critical basic nursing skills, including how to take vital signs, provide personal care, and assist patients with mobility. You can become fully certified as an entry-level nursing assistant at no cost to you," said Seth Flatten, who administers the Next Generation Nursing Assistant program at Minnesota State College Southeast.

Students who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate of completion and be eligible to take the Nursing Assistant Competency Evaluation and be placed on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry.

Note that space is limited and courses will be filled on a first come, first served basis. Participants are required to work as a nursing assistant after training completion.

Go to "Next Generation Nursing Assistant Training for more information and to register. For additional assistance, contact Seth Flatten at 507-703-6165 or [email protected]
