The first ever Southeast Technical Alumni and Friends Reunion was a great success. Approximately 150 people were in attendance with 50 years of graduates represented, starting as far back as 1963 and as recent as 2013. Alumni were entertained with tours, photo albums, photo slide shows, tasty food, plenty of reminiscing and more. Multiple attendees expressed their enjoyment saying, "It's about time." Truck driving alumnus Kiel Warnken said, "I graduated in '07 and I have waited 6 years for something like this."

A variety of current and former staff and faculty were also on hand to share in the festivities, “I feel it was a great success. As I talk with most of the attendees,” said President James Johnson, “one thing that was evident: they were very proud of the college and their attendance at our institution.”

Mark your calendar for the Red Wing campus reunion, which is scheduled for October 12, 2013.

Healthcare Careers in High Demand, Program Deadline Fast ApproachingMedical Laboratory Technician

Minnesota State College-Southeast Technical offers a variety of programs to meet the needs of an ever changing community. Students who want to enter Practical Nursing, Nursing Mobility or Medical Laboratory Technician programs should be aware that these programs utilize a secondary acceptance system. The deadline for students to complete their prerequisite checklist in order to start this fall is July 15, 2013. It is important to note that students must apply and be accepted to the college before they can apply to their program of choice.

Nursing Student Checking PulseSoutheast Technical is responding to the region's nursing shortage with new degree options. The nursing program is more hands on than ever before. Clinical and lab experiences provide simulated scenarios and direct patient care encounters for students and multiple clinical sites allow students to explore different fields within nursing before graduation. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is predicting that job outlook for nurses will increase between 22 and 26 percent before 2020.

Employment of medical laboratory technicians is expected to grow 16 percent this decade. This program launched fall 2012 to meet the needs of an aging society. Increased demand for healthcare services and increasing complexity will increase the demand for lab personnel. MLTs work as members of the healthcare team performing laboratory procedures that aid in diagnosis and treatment of diseases. They perform blood collections, analyze blood and other body fluids, match blood for transfusions and examine specimens for bacteria, parasites and other microorganisms.

Plans are underway to offer a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in Red Wing at Minnesota State College - Southeast Technical. The program will be geared toward the needs of working adults who want to complete a bachelor's degree.

"Students will enjoy the advantages of attending a college with dedicated, experienced faculty, personal attention and limited class sizes," said Dr. Paul Christensen, Assistant Dean of the Graduate School of Business and Technology at Saint Mary's University. "Since we're assessing details of when to start the program and what the course schedule would look like, we're encouraging anyone interested in completing their bachelor's degree in Red Wing to visit one of our information sessions."  Dr. Christensen added, "Our goal is to start a cohort of 15 students during the fall 2014 semester."

The public-private partnership will help students manage the cost of obtaining a high-quality college education. Many incoming college students attend two-year schools with the express intention of transferring their credits toward a bachelor's degree.

According to a recent study, completing two years at a community college first, reduces the overall amount a student pays for a four-year degree.

The Bachelor of Science program requires a total of 122 semester credits with 36 credits being upper-division credits offered through this Saint Mary's program. The previous 86 credits can be from Southeast Technical, other colleges, CLEP or DANTES exams, prior learning or any combination of these.

The first step in learning more about the program is to meet with an advisor from Saint Mary's in Red Wing for a degree-planning session. See list below for information sessions, open house dates and degree planning sessions in Red Wing. No appointment is necessary. If possible, bring a copy of any previous college transcripts.
