RED WING -- If technical colleges are experiencing a renaissance, Travis Thul is a Renaissance man.

Dean of trade and technology at Minnesota State College Southeast in Winona and Red Wing, Thul wants to see students use community colleges to advance in their careers one step at a time.

"A career is like a staircase," he said. "If we can get them on that first step, then they're closer to that second step and that third and fourth step."

Schools such as MSC-SE, Rochester Technical and Community College and Riverland College in Austin offer those stepping stones. They build the foundation of a career and help a student start earning a return on his or her education investment more quickly, while leaving the option open for more education down the road.

"That's the right way to do it," Thul said. "If you start in our program, you've got a base you can take in any direction."
