Republican-Eagle: McDonough family lives with diabetes diagnosis

Dagny McDonough of Red Wing is included in a different set of CDC statistics — being one of 208,000 people younger than 20 years living with diagnosed diabetes. Five-year-old Dagny was diagnosed with diabetes Type 1 in April of 2017.

"We were broken," said Kelly McDonough, Dagny's mother, when the family learned of her diagnosis.

Hands-on learning

The path to Dagny's diagnosis involves a bit of luck, her parents said.

A student in Minnesota State College Southeast's nursing program, Kelly was learning about diabetes as Dagny's symptoms first became noticeable.

"We trusted our instincts," said Joe McDonough, Dagny's father, as her symptoms would flair up, then dissipate.
