Winona Daily News: Sending a message on debt: Winona's Southeast Tech drops tuition 1 percent for 2016-17 year

Southeast Technical College this week announced that even amid a mandated tuition freeze for all state colleges and universities, it will lower tuition for all students by 1 percent for the 2016-17 school year.

On paper, that means the cost of each credit will fall from $167.31 to $165.64. While the change won't zero out student loan balances, the decision is as much symbolic as it is practical, administrators said.

Nate Emerson, vice president of student affairs at Southeast Tech, said Wednesday the tuition decrease serves as a sign to both current and potential students that the college takes debt seriously and is doing what it can to help.
