Southeast Tech receives $1.76M in federal dollars for transportation education

Southeast Technical College will receive $1.76 million in federal money to partner with a number of universities to provide new training in transportation fields, federal officials announced Thursday.

The money is part of $20 million headed to community and technical colleges across Minnesota designated to help the schools provide specialized training in transportation, health care, manufacturing and other fields where high-skilled workers are in demand.

Southeast Tech will partner with eight other schools along the Mississippi River corridor to provide training in transportation fields. Southeast Tech plans to use the funds to expand its transportation program offerings by offering a diploma in diesel engine maintenance.

Ron Sellnau, Southeast Tech’s vice president of academic affairs, said Thursday the expanded offering will fill a need for area employers. Businesses like Peterbilt of Winona, which have large fleets of diesel trucks, or companies that do a lot of shipping have trouble finding skilled employees, he said.
