Southeast Tech truck-driving students are set to graduate Thursday from free program for low-income, minority students

To prepare for her commercial driver's license exams, social worker Mariah Withrow stayed up nights with review sheets and papers near her bedside and during the day practiced maneuvering a semi truck and trailer, over and over again.

Withrow is one of 12 area students who will graduate Thursday from a free summer CDL training course offered by the Minnesota Department of Transportation and Southeast Technical College. The program is geared toward women, minorities and other socially or economically disadvantaged groups.

"MnDOT stresses diversity," Southeast Tech instructor Paul Foster said. "For women, this is not a traditional occupation, and MnDOT tries to be as diverse as they can."
