Biology instructor Elizabeth Micheel named Minnesota State College Southeast's 2023-2024 Outstanding Educator, Commencement Marshal
Winona and Red Wing, MN (April 23, 2024) -- Minnesota State College Southeast is proud to announce the selection of Biology instructor Elizabeth (Liz) Micheel as the college's 2023-2024 Outstanding Educator of the Year. She was among the college and university educators recognized by Chancellor Scott Olson and the Minnesota State Board of Trustees at a statewide awards ceremony held on April 17, 2024.
Liz Micheel has also been chosen by her peers at the college to serve as this year's Commencement Marshal. She will carry the ceremonial mace as she leads the academic procession at Southeast's Commencement Ceremony, which will take place on Friday, May 10, 2024 (3 pm) at Winona State University.
"From the many nominations for this honor submitted by students, faculty, and staff, Liz was named most frequently this year. She was praised for her skill as an instructor of Biology, Pathophysiology, and Anatomy & Physiology, and as well as for her dedicated advising of the college's Equestrian Club," said Dr. Marsha Danielson, President of Minnesota State College Southeast.
Dr. Danielson added, "Her students and club members praised her ability to make diverse learners feel welcome, her passion for teaching, and the tireless time, brilliant ideas, and important connections she brings to the college."
Liz Micheel earned a Master of Science in Biology (Physiology Emphasis) and a Bachelor of Science in Biology, both at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. She has a Master of Education (Equestrian Education Emphasis) from William Woods University. She is certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, Intl. as a Therapeutic Riding Instructor and an Equine Specialist in Mental Health & Learning.
Micheel joined the faculty of Southeast in 2010. Previously she taught at St. Cloud Community & Technical College and Winona State University. She also has experience as a wildland firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service and worked for several years in a veterinary practice based in La Crosse.
In nominating Liz for the Outstanding Educator award, students described her as an enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and caring instructor. "She pays attention to her students and what kind of people they are . . . she uplifts, helps, offers, and is overall a great support," one student said.
As another student described Liz's role at the college, '[We] come from many different walks of life; she accepts everyone without question . . . she creates a safe learning environment for asking questions and for help without judgment.'"
"Liz's joyful, warm, open-hearted spirit is truly a gift to the college," said Dr. Danielson. "Being named an Outstanding Educator by the Minnesota State Board of Trustees is an honor well-deserved."
