Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament is another hole-in-one for Minnesota State College Southeast Foundation, students
Minnesota State College Southeast alumni and friends enjoyed a glorious day of golfing for a good cause on Monday, raising funds to support scholarships and programs at the college.
132 golfers participated in MSC Southeast Foundation's 15th Annual Alumni and Friends Golf Tournament on August 7, 2023 at Cedar Valley Golf Course in Winona.
Casie Johnson, the college's Director of Stewardship and Foundation Operations, has organized the annual tournament every year since its inception.
"I've gotten to meet and work with so many wonderful people over the years from our communities through this, which has led to so many other partnerships for the college," she said. "It's a network that expands in the best way. Plus, it's golf, sun, fun and smiles!"
She said that when the tournament started in 2009, there were 18 teams, one starting at each hole. "We've since grown to selling out every year at 36 teams with two teams starting on each hole. We have never missed a year, even during 2020."
But due to a torrential downpour in 2014, there wasn't much golfing.
"We had to come in immediately after starting. Some got one hole in, some didn't even swing their clubs, and we were all absolutely soaked!" remembered Casie. "But everyone stayed for an early dinner, and we still had a fantastic event and auction. It truly showed the support for Southeast that people stuck around and made the best of it."
Golfing for a good cause
Jennifer Hawkins, the Foundation's Executive Director, noted that the event helps the Foundation fulfill its mission to support students and sustain and grow the college through philanthropy, stewardship, and community development.
Last year the MSC Southeast Foundation awarded 206 scholarships totaling more than $160,000. The Foundation also provides funds for student basic needs at the college, such as The Pantry food shelf and emergency grants.
"Beyond the annual golf tournament, there are many ways to support the college. We can help you find the way that works best for you: one-time gifts, pledges over a period of time, or estate gifts," she said. "If you're making a donation, please check to see if your company will match it. It's a great way to double the impact of your gift."
Foundation president's point of view
Foundation Board President Lyle Blanchard was out on the course on Monday enjoying a round of golf with friends.
He has a long and positive association with MSC Southeast. He was involved as a marketing professional as far back as the late 1990s.
"When I was asked to serve on the Board, I said of 'course!' Knowing how the college has an immediate impact on the workforce, what that means to each community, and that tomorrow's leaders are here right now and might need the support of the Foundation -- that made saying 'yes' easy."
More recently, he has been connected as a parent when his son attended MSC Southeast for his commercial driver's license.
"I saw and heard first-hand the quality of the education here and how hard the instructors work to help their students," Lyle said. "The flexibility the college has to serve a variety of students with an outstanding education, the incredible and caring instructors, as well as its connection to business and industry makes Minnesota State College Southeast a special place."
Milestone anniversaries coming up
In 2023-2024, the college is celebrating milestone anniversaries for both campuses. "Red Wing is celebrating 50 years in the community and Winona is celebrating 75 years," Jennifer Hawkins said. "We are planning a variety of events on both campuses throughout the year that celebrate our history with an eye toward our future. Consider this your invitation to join us!"
"There are so many ways to get involved and so many ways to use your talents, treasure, or time to help make a difference," added Lyle Blanchard. "Reach out, get to know the Foundation, and find out how you can make an impact. It matters!"
