Winona Daily News: Winona State, MSC Southeast send a $527 million surge into local economy

When asked how they're impacted by living in a college town, it may be all too easy for Winonans to rattle off the heavy traffic during the school year, the parties that spill out closer to their house than they'd like or noisy nights at certain bars. A little less visible but much more significant, however, is the money those same college students are pumping into the economy.

A new report from the Minnesota State system estimates that WSU generates $447.9 million in economic impact per year, making up almost 80 percent of the system’s total impact on southeastern Minnesota’s economy. Minnesota State College Southeast generates $80.3 million.

Together, the two schools support more than 4,000 jobs in the region, whether that’s people directly employed at the college or those who benefit from having thousands of student customers in town.
