"We especially want to invite area Veterans and Service Members to attend the Veterans Day Commemoration," said Todd Herber, Principal of Red Wing High School. "We are setting aside seating for them on the floor level of the gymnasium, both for easier access, and so that everyone present can honor their service to our country."
"This will be a unified community event," adds Lieutenant Commander Greg Cady, an instructor at MSC Southeast. "It represents a true effort to thank our Veterans, Service Members, and their families for the sacrifices they have made."
Red Wing resident Major Jennifer Aasland, United States Air Force Reserve, will give the keynote address. She is the Training Flight Commander, 934th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron, Minneapolis Air Reserve Station, Minnesota. The squadron has over 100 members from six career fields supporting contingencies and humanitarian operations worldwide. Jennifer is the fifth generation of military members in her family and the first to make service her life-long commitment.
"It's great to have a person right from our own community who can serve as role model and inspire our students," said Sergeant First Class (US Army Ret) Lance Garrick, President of Hiawatha Valley Family Beyond the Yellow Ribbon.
Red Wing High School Band, a cappella choral ensemble Ovation, and a brass quintet from Minnesota State College Southeast will provide live music for the special event.
Following the event, Veterans, Service Members, families, and caregivers are invited to stay for a Social Hour. Marine Corps Vietnam Combat Veteran Lieutenant Colonel Richard Johnson will "saber cut" a cake, and cookies and coffee will be served.
