Winona Post: MCS-SE nursing scores bounce back

Minnesota State College (MSC) Southeast received good news last week as it was reported that its practical nursing test results skyrocketed to 100 percent.

According to MSC Southeast, the college's one-year licensed practical nursing (LPN) program succeeded in having 100 percent of testing graduates pass their NCLEX exams, which is well above both state and national averages. In addition, the scores for graduates of the associate degree in nursing (ADN) program are up to 84 percent, leading to hope that a two-year degree will return in the next several years.

First-time pass rates for the school have been rising over the past few years as well, reaching an average of 96.3 percent in 2018. According to Jennifer Eccles, dean of health at MSC Southeast, out of the 27 graduates to take the exam in the past year, only one failed to pass. 

"Our students are doing really well," Eccles said, "and our faculty just nailed it."

Eccles went on to explain that the nursing staff has had a huge hand in improving the students' success rates, both through programming and their focus on students' well-being. 

"They are so dedicated to seeing the students do well, and they pour their hearts and souls into their teaching," Eccles said. "They've been educating themselves on how to make quality programming, and looking to bring successful programming from other schools here."
