'Worthwhile in the end': Lewiston-Altura student earns high school diploma -- plus college degree

LEWISTON, Minn. -- A three-sport athlete at Lewiston-Altura High School, Spencer Speltz has always been competitive.

So when Spencer, preparing for his senior year, realized he had enough college credit to shoot for an associate's degree in addition to a high school diploma, the young man went for it.

"Once it was in his mind, it just became a challenge for him," said Carrie Speltz, his mom. "Our family has always been competitive like that -- not necessarily trying to beat other people, but always trying to one-up ourselves."

Added Spencer, who completed his two-year degree this spring and will don a cap and gown at Lewiston-Altura's graduation on Friday: "I didn't really think about it, but the end goal was cool to look at."

When 18-year-old Spencer Speltz sat through the commencement ceremony in Lewiston-Altura High School's sweaty gym, not many of his classmates knew he'd graduated already. While getting his high school degree, he'd also gotten an associates degree from Minnesota State College Southeast.
