Ah Vang is Setting Trends

Published 10/30/12

Keeping up with trends is part of the job for Minnesota State College – Southeast Technical alumna, Ah Vang.  As a Ah Vangstylist at Fantastic Sam’s she worked hard to build up her clientele.  Keeping up with trends is what keeps her regulars coming back.

Not only is Ah keeping up with trends, she is setting them.  She was honored with a national award in September 2012.  Ah was one of three finalists in the Male Cut and Style category nationwide to win a trip to Las Vegas for the finals.  In addition to being honored with this award, she was honored with being one of the first Minnesotans to go to the finals, ever.

Vang’s favorite part of her job is meeting new people.  “You never know who’ll walk in from day to day.  If someone is having a bad day, you could be the one to change it by giving them a good cut.”

Hair styling is a service that takes flair.  “It is an art and that’s what I love about it.  You take techniques and make them your own.  No two stylists will cut hair the same way.”  Vang goes on to say, “People are wearing your sculpture every day; dramatic or simple, it’s all art.  ”

Vang graduated with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Cosmetology from Southeast Technical in May 2010.  She says she really enjoyed her experience in the program.  The one on one personal attention she received from her instructors made the experience invaluable, “they really focused on us as students.”

Ah’s advice for others interested in going in to Cosmetology, “Don’t cut yourself short.  Put your heart into it and be willing to keep learning.”
